What is the Boiler Upgrade Scheme?

How the Boiler Upgrade Scheme heat pump grant works

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) is a UK government heat pump grant for England and Wales. It takes money off the cost of replacing a gas boiler, oil boiler, LPG boiler or electric heating with a heat pump. Unlike most grants, your installer applies for it and the grant comes straight off your quote.

Funds the scheme

UK Government

The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero sets the grant amounts and budget. The scheme has been extended to 2030.

Checks and pays

Ofgem

Runs the scheme. It checks each application, confirms your consent by email, issues the grant voucher and pays the installer.

Applies and installs

H&R Energy Solutions

Surveys your home, applies to Ofgem for you, takes the grant off your quote and installs your heat pump to MCS standards.

Eligibility

Boiler Upgrade Scheme eligibility: who can get the grant?

The scheme is open to most property owners in England and Wales. These are the main rules.

You can apply if

  • You own the property: your home, a home you rent out, a second home or a small business property
  • It is in England or Wales
  • You are replacing gas, oil, LPG or electric heating
  • There is no income limit, and you don’t need to be on benefits
  • You don’t need an EPC or insulation to apply
  • Earlier insulation funding doesn’t stop you applying

Not eligible

  • Properties in Scotland or Northern Ireland
  • Council and housing association homes
  • Most new builds, unless you built it yourself or it was finished with a fossil fuel boiler
  • Replacing an existing heat pump or other low carbon heating
  • Hybrid systems that keep a gas or oil boiler
  • Properties that have already had government funding for a heat pump or biomass boiler

Landlords can apply too

Private landlords can use the grant to replace heating in let properties. Tenants can’t apply themselves, because the owner has to agree to and confirm the application with Ofgem.
